German team runners-up in languages debating competition

MFL debating competition pupils

Pupils from Stockport Grammar took part in the annual northern schools modern foreign languages debating competition earlier this month, where the school fielded teams in all three languages for the first time.

In the competition, pupils had to debate difficult topics such as “religion makes good men evil” and “the Olympic Games are a complete waste of money” in French, German and Spanish. All of our teams gave an excellent account of themselves, speaking convincingly and fluently on the topics.

The French team, consisting of Adam Afife and Isobel Bull, and the Spanish team of Nathan Cadogan and Lorna Cole narrowly missed on places of the final.

However, our German team, made up of Jack Heaton and Shelby Whyatt, made it to the final where they were unlucky to as finish as runners-up after a very close final debate.
