Our hockey 1st XI’s excellent start to the season continued last week when they qualified for the north final of the national schools U18s competition.
The girls, who won every game in last month’s Greater Manchester section to qualify for Friday’s north-west round, suffered an early setback as King Edward VII and Queen Mary held them to a 1-1 draw, despite Stockport Grammar dominating the game.
Another impressive performance followed in a 2-1 win against Sedbergh to qualify from the pool, which set up a match against St Mary’s Crosby. An emphatic 4-0 was no less than the girls deserved as they outclassed their opponents and reached the next round of this prestigious competition.
Miss Sharon Withington, the teacher in charge of hockey, said: “All of the girls put in a fantastic performance at Timperley Hockey Club and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the army of parents who came to support them, who will hopefully be able to join us for the next round in Leeds.”
In more good news for the team, Emily Spencer and Martha Watson have both been selected to attend an England hockey trial and will play in a forthcoming territorial tournament.
