Sixth form engineers work with United Utilities

Pupils at United Utilities water treatment plant

Engineers in the sixth form have joined together with United Utilities as part of a six month project which will see them engineer a solution to a problem.

Led by Mr Richard Heyes, pupils Laura Chitty, Jake Bradshaw, Quintus Carr and Olivia Briggs will be working with the water company to improve the bar screens that filter waste water at their treatment plants, as well as the methods they use to scrape the screens when they become clogged.

To start the project, the pupils visited a United Utilities plant in Whaley Bridge to gain an insight into how the waste water treatment process works, and will later spend a total of five days in a university engineering department on their way to developing a solution and producing a final report.
