Thursday’s annual rugby union Varsity match at Twickenham will feature two Old Stopfordians in the Cambridge University side. Steve Townend (OS 2009) will start the game at fly-half while Mathonwy Thomas (OS 2007), a regular in the centre for the team this winter, starts on the bench.

The match, a regular fixture between Oxford and Cambridge since 1872, will be screened live on Sky Sports 1 at 2pm, with tickets for the match still available should you wish to cheer on the boys in person.

Mr Chris Wright, the head of PE and Games at Stockport Grammar School, said: “Steve and Mathonwy were great servants of our rugby teams. It is a rare honour for a school to have one, let alone two, representatives in the match, so our congratulations and best wishes go to both of them.”

Steve and Mathonwy are two of four Old Stopfordians who have captained their colleges at Cambridge in recent years. Alongside Steve (Downing College) and Mathonwy (St John’s), Matthew Jones (OS 2008) has captained Queens’ College while Christien Mott has led the Churchill team.

Mathonwy also represented the Cambridge rugby league side in their Varsity match at the Stoop back in March this year.
