Pupils take closer look inside their smartphones at café sci

Dr Vernon-Parry at café sci

Dr Karen Vernon-Parry from Sheffield Hallam University was the latest host of a café sci talk in the library when she asked “what’s in my stuff?” as part of a project about the materials contained within some of the objects we own.

With an audience of pupils ranging from the fourth year through to the sixth form, Dr Vernon-Parry looked at some of the 40 chemical elements that are in a smartphone and focused on the financial, ethical, environmental and political costs of obtaining these precious materials.

School governor Professor John Dainton has also been a recent speaker at a café sci session. Professor Dainton, whose experiment is at Cern, the home of the Large Hadron Collider, spoke to our physicists about matter and understanding the structure of the universe.
