An encouraging 5-2 lead early in the game was reduced to 5-3 by quarter-time, and by half-time Newcastle had levelled the score at 5-5.
Stops pulled ahead 7-6 during the third quarter, and scored two early goals in the last quarter to take a 9-6 lead. This should have clinched the game, but Newcastle pulled back two more goals to leave Stops clinging on to a 9-8 victory as the game ended.
The midfield worked hard on an uneven energy-sapping pitch, while the attack might have shown more consistency. The defence proved sound and Mark Woodhead put in a good performance in goal.
Scorers were Catto (2), Withington (2), Sullivan (2), Bowden (1), Hall (1).
