Rugby stars selected for North of England training squads

Rugby first XV prepare for scrum

1st XV rugby stars James Flynn and Tom Morton have been rewarded for their superb form this season after being selected for the north of England training squads.

Sixth form pupil James, chosen for the North U18s group, will attend a development weekend at the end of January in Cheshire. The weekend will include a day at Sale Sharks’ training ground where James will take part in game related practice with the Aviva Premiership side’s U19s squad.

Fifth year pupil Tom, a newcomer to the school’s 1st XV this season, will be training with the North U16s, who meet in Leeds this coming weekend.

Both players will be looking to impress during the weekends which precede the divisional festivals – the final trials before the England age group teams are selected.

Mr Hugo Corbett, the Stockport Grammar School 1st XV rugby coach, said:

James and Tom have had exceptional seasons in the 1st XV and have both worked extremely hard.

James has led the team by example and been an inspirational captain, and this recognition is just reward for his hard work throughout the season.

In his first season of senior rugby Tom has played fly-half for the 1st XV and has demonstrated a maturity and reading of the game far beyond his years and experience.

James and Tom will also both be in action when the 1st XV host Rishworth in the sixth round of the Daily Mail Vase on Wednesday afternoon. A victory would put the squad through to the last 16 of the competition and just three wins away from a place in the final at Twickenham.

Thank you to Brooks Macdonald for their continued sponsorship of the 1st XV.
