Our hockey 1st XI face Cheltenham Ladies’ College tomorrow, knowing that the winners will qualify for the finals of the national schools U18s tournament.
The fixture will take place at Cannock hockey club in Staffordshire and is between the other runners-up from November’s regional finals.
The team had swept aside all the opposition in last term’s Stockport, Greater Manchester and north-west rounds of the competition to qualify for the north finals in Leeds. They performed brilliantly that day, winning two matches and drawing one, but were left devastated after a penalty strokes defeat to Kirkham Grammar saw them finish second.
However, Tuesday’s playoff will give them another chance of qualifying for the national finals, a chance which Miss Sharon Withington, the teacher in charge of hockey, thinks the girls deserve:
Let’s hope the girls play as well as they did in Leeds when we play in the runners-up tournament – if they do I’m sure we will see Kirkham again in the national finals and hopefully beat them in normal time there!
