Hockey 1st XI out of national schools tournament despite brave performance

First XI hockey squad against Cheltenham

Our hockey 1st XI can look back at their performance in the national schools U18s tournament with an immense amount of pride, despite a penalty strokes defeat denying them a place in the national finals for the second time this year.

Brilliant performances saw the team win last term’s Stockport, Greater Manchester and north-west rounds of the competition, but a defeat on penalties to Kirkham Grammar in the north final saw the girls finish second and have to face a playoff to qualify for the national finals.

The playoff came against Cheltenham Ladies’ College last week, and the freezing conditions at Birmingham University didn’t stop the team from displaying their never-say-die attitude, with Olivia Simpson’s late equaliser forcing penalty flicks.

Cheltenham ultimately triumphed after the lottery of a penalty shootout wasn’t kind to Stockport Grammar, but the girls can reflect on a great experience in the competition, knowing that they were unbeatable in normal time during their four-month adventure in the tournament.
