After months of rehearsals and preparation which has brought together nearly 200 pupils from across the school, our production of Oliver! finally opened last night to rave reviews.
On stage, the brilliant main cast of 16 are supported by a chorus of over 50 and a wonderful orchestra, while an even bigger off-stage team are responsible for everything from lighting to publicity.
Commenting on the performance by sending us 140-character reviews to @stockportgs on Twitter, our audience loved opening night. Helen was one of our reviewers:
Brilliant first night! I knew it would be good but it exceeded all my expectations – Bill Sykes was terrifying!
Jess, another reviewer, loved the show just as much:
2 words: absolutely fantastic! I loved it and wish I had bought tickets for every night!
Alison was another big fan:
Congratulations to everyone involved in tonight’s performance of Oliver! Wonderful!
This morning, our first and second year pupils attended a special workshop which saw cast and crew members take part in conversations and question and answer sessions about the show’s production, before performing three numbers from the musical.
The production forms part of our programme of special events to mark the 525th anniversary of Stockport Grammar School’s foundation. February’s gala concert at the Royal Northern College of Music marked the start of the year’s events which will culminate in the official opening of the new Woodsmoor building.
Local businesses ProFinance, Hyde Management Services and Computer England will be joining us at sponsored receptions over the next three performances to help us celebrate this anniversary and support the school’s bursary fund.
Oliver! will play to three more sell-out audiences before closing on Saturday evening. Keep an eye on the website over the next few days for more reviews and photos.
