Artists capture Manchester and Salford in preparation for A-level work

Pupils drawing in Castlefield

Our A-level artists headed into Manchester and Salford last week to spend a couple of days completing the preliminary drawings that will form the foundation for the rest of the term’s work.

The first stop on the trip was Castlefield, where the area’s former industrial features, the Bridgewater canal and the scale of the bridges make for a superb environment in which to draw. The Manchester Art Gallery and the city’s Northern Quarter then provided further sources for the pupils’ work in the afternoon.

Saturday was spent in Salford, where pupils drew and photographed the buildings and bridges that make up the quays and the city’s new MediaCity development, before they made time to visit the Lowry gallery to view the contemporary exhibitions alongside the permanent collections of Lowry’s works.
