Athlete Jess Coulson (OS 2008) produced an outstanding performance to finish third in the Cross Internacional de Atapuerca in Spain last weekend.
Up against a world-class field of runners, Jess (pictured furthest right) completed the race in a time of 25:42 and was the first European over the finishing line – sending out a strong message ahead of next month’s European cross country championships.
I started off steady and gradually in each lap picked my way through the pack. Hiwot and Linet had left the chasing pack after the first lap, so it was a race for the minor places.
I kept relaxed and sheltered from the wind, and coming into the last lap I felt good. I slowly wound it up and found myself in third position and able to finish strong.
I’m really happy with how the race went and it was a very enjoyable trip with great support from the England team and managers.
22-year-old Jess, who runs for Stockport Harriers, was also a winner of last month’s Great Edinburgh Run and was a runner-up behind Jo Pavey in the Great South Run a fortnight ago.
Jess still trains at Stockport Grammar and passed on some her expertise to our current pupils during a series of athletics masterclasses during the last summer term.
