The recurring theme of Stops’ season has been an inability to field our full strength team, and this was again a factor as Stops succumbed to a 14-6 defeat at the hands of Norbury.
After Andrew Withington had volunteered in our last match to play in goal, the retired David Withington kindly offered to make a return to the lacrosse field to ensure Stops were able to field a team this week, and performed admirably in goal, drawing on his all of his previous experience.
Stopfordians had a bare ten players, and in addition to David Withington’s return from retirement, we also welcomed back Mark Bowen who quickly got back up to speed and delivered a solid performance in an unfamiliar position of attack.
Against a solid Norbury side, Stops were always going to struggle to get a result, but a competitive three quarter time scoreline of 9-5 is testament to the great effort put in by everyone before it slipped away slightly in the final quarter. Great credit must go to Pete Woodhead and Pete Hibbert for their tireless midfield display.
Stopfordians are currently reviewing our limited squad strength and would be delighted if anyone not currently playing with the team would like to get involved. If you, or anyone you know would be interested in playing for Stopfordians, please contact team captain Phil Hall on firstname.lastname@example.org.
