Following a win against Ashton the previous week it was good to collect a second successive victory and a tribute to the consistent efforts of team captain Phil Hall and vice-captain Pete Woodhead throughout the season.
After sustaining an injury at Ashton Paul Bowden was not expecting to play, but to add one substitute to a squad of just 10 Paul took to the field and played a key role in a fine team performance.
The first half saw Newcastle putting Stops under pressure, coming back from 2-4 down in the second quarter with two man-up goals to take the half-time score to 4-4. In the third quarter Stops began to pull away as the finishing improved and produced five goals, while only one was conceded.
The final quarter was mainly one-way traffic. Newcastle threw in some spirited attacks, but the defence of Matt Day, Jamie Allen and Adrian Chandler coped well.
A total of seven more goals gave Stops a comfortable victory, but with only one game left against Rochdale survival in Division Premier Two is unlikely
A brief footnote: Rick Griffiths turned out in goal for the first time this season completing 50 consecutive seasons of team lacrosse since starting at Stockport Grammar School in 1962. Just by way of a reminder that new players are needed!
