Our Junior School pupils helped raise hundreds of pounds for Key 103’s Cash for Kids cause on a day featuring a helicopter, an X Factor winner, a star of Coronation Street and lots of excited children!
X Factor winner Shayne Ward, Coronation Street’s Georgia May Foote and Key 103 breakfast show presenter Mike Toolan visited us as part of Cash for Kids’ latest campaign to raise £100,000 to help transform a concrete wasteland into a “green oasis of calm” at the children’s outpatients department at Wythenshawe UHSM hospital.
Stockport Grammar was the first stop on the celebrities’ tour of Greater Manchester schools, and our children were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for £500 raised by holding a sponsored walk, going to our parents’ association junior discos and taking part in a mass-Gangnam Style dance – in addition to generous extra donations from pupils and their parents.
After landing, presenter Mike danced along with the boys and girls and told them all about how the money they’ve raised will help the children in the hospital’s outpatients department.
Junior School deputy headmaster Mr Simon Milnes, who appeared on the breakfast show earlier in the week, then invited some lucky pupils to quiz the celebrities on the hospital, being on the radio, life on the set of Coronation Street and what it was like to be a contestant on the X Factor.
Phoebe and Pippa in year six were two of the pupils lucky enough to ask them questions, and while they were waiting for the helicopter to land they told us:
We can’t wait to meet Shayne! We really enjoyed the first-aid themed races in the morning, and then the older children practised bandaging each other up while the younger ones dressed up in emergency services costumes.
Finn from year one was another lucky interviewer who told us what he was looking forward to most:
I’m really excited to meet a real person from the radio and to see the helicopter!
After meeting their fans and signing autographs, Shayne, Georgia and Mike waved goodbye to the children as their helicopter took off to take them to their next location.
