Francesca Bailey is named Stockport Grammar Masterchef champion

Stockport Grammar Masterchef winners

Francesca Bailey has been named as our 2013 Masterchef champion by judges from top Cheshire restaurant the Grill on the Edge, while last year’s winner Emma Winder was awarded the lower school prize.

Winners

As well as being the competition’s overall winner, Francesca also won the middle school trophy for her salmon steak with avocado and crème fraîche served with grilled asparagus followed by a saucy chocolate pot – and takes home a £75 voucher for the Grill on the Edge where her dish will be featured on the specials board on the day of her visit.

Emma Winder, who was our 2012 Masterchef, was chosen as our lower school winner for her Moroccan lamb steaks on a bed of roasted vegetables served with chickpea mash and a redcurrant jus (pictured below right) followed by pear and toffee sponge with a warm toffee sauce.

Expert advice

Having progressed through the competition’s two earlier rounds, our finalists had an hour to cook their choice of two courses, with the assistance of a friend each. Chefs Tony and Marcus from the Grill on the Edge kept a close eye on our pupils’ preparation skills, stopping to chat about the dishes and offer our finalists’ advice throughout.

As well as Francesca and Emma’s winning plates, other contenders on the menu of 16 delicious dishes included duck with noodles and a teriyaki sauce, chilli chocolate cake with orange frosting and basil gnocchi with tomato sauce, wild rocket and pancetta.

“Wouldn’t look out of place in a restaurant”

After the winners were announced around a table of amazing food, exhausted pupils and their proud parents, head of Food Technology Mrs Ruth Groves told us:

The chefs from Grill on the Edge told us that all our pupils’ dishes wouldn’t look out of place in their restaurant, so every one of our finalists can be really proud of what they produced in such a short space of time.

We say it after every final, but the standard of food really does keep getting better and better – and that’s why we’re already really looking forward to next year’s competition!

Thank you to the Grill on the Edge for their continued support of the competition.
