After Key 103’s Mike Toolan and his celebrity friends landed at Stockport Grammar to collect a cheque for their Cash for Kids cause last month, our year five children made a return journey to the station’s studios to double their donation to the charity.
Coronation Street’s Georgia May Foote, X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Key 103 breakfast show presenter Mike Toolan visited us in a helicopter at the end of May as part of the campaign to raise £100,000 to help transform a concrete wasteland into a “green oasis of calm” at the children’s outpatients department at Wythenshawe UHSM hospital.
Our children handed over a cheque for £500 that day, raised by our pupils and their parents, but have since accumulated another £582 to add to the total – meaning Stockport Grammar Juniors are the cause’s largest school donors.
A handful of pupils travelled with Mrs Catherine Hampson and deputy headmaster Mr Simon Milnes to Key 103’s Castlefield studios to present the second cheque to hosts Mike and Chelsea, before being allowed to pick some songs for airplay and watch the presenters in action. They even had a go at recording some links and enjoyed a full tour of the studios before returning to school armed with goodies and happy memories.
Kitt Henderson, who was one of the school’s top fundraisers after selling jam to friends and family, had a fantastic time:
I really enjoyed selling the jam for the charity – it was a pleasure, especially getting rewarded like that! Watching the DJs, getting to try out the headphones and meeting everyone was just brilliant. I’d do anything to go back there!
