London 2012 gold medal-winner Jonathan Fox MBE joined us at our Junior School prizegiving evening to help bring the school year to a close before a well-deserved summer break.
Jonathan, who won gold for Team GB in the men’s S7 100m backstroke at the Paralympics, presented trophies and prizes to pupils who have made outstanding contributions to their subjects, sport and the life of the school throughout the year, and gave mementoes to our year six leavers moving upwards to senior school.
Magical musical performances
Parents, governors and staff watched on during a ceremony which also included magical musical performances by the school’s soloists, orchestra and choir, while headmaster Mr Larry Fairclough, giving his last report at prizegiving before retiring later this year, paid tribute to departing director of studies Mrs Karen Horrocks and fellow retiree Mrs Ros Scott, who leaves us after years of dedicated service to our children.
Afterwards, Jonathan generously spent over an hour meeting and signing autographs for the children – and their parents – who had all remembered him so fondly from his performances in the pool last summer.
Jonathan was the second world-class swimmer to visit the Junior School in the space of a week. Just a week earlier, world champion and five-time Olympian Mark Foster spoke in assembly about his career and motivations while visiting Stockport Grammar as guest of honour at our Senior School speech day ceremony.
