German debaters win in language competition

German debating competition winners

Ryan Jude and Jed Holloway were big winners in the German section of the seventh annual northern schools modern foreign languages debating competition, while our French and Spanish teams were also outstanding.

After topping their group and progressing through the semi-final, Ryan and Jed lifted the German shield after convincingly winning their final debate – spoken entirely in their respective language – on whether or not it’s better to go on holiday in your home country.

Our French team of Ben Oldfield and Nick Dove and Spanish team of Helen Merrick and Mac Bonar also performed impressively throughout the day, speaking fluently in debates ranging from whether we need paper any more to if prisons are of no use – all challenging enough to argue in a mother tongue, never mind a second language!
