Our 1st XI hockey squad have qualified for the national finals of the schools championships for girls after a magnificent performance saw them win the north of England title in Leeds.
The girls’ win means that – for the first time in over a decade – Stockport Grammar will represent the north in February’s national finals, where they will face the winners of the other regional qualifiers for the title of champions of England.
Head of hockey Miss Sharon Withington was rightly proud of the girls after they won all five games without conceding a goal:
It’s like a dream come true for the girls and, of course, myself!
I knew that we were a side to be reckoned with this year, but we have exceeded all expectations. It was a magnificent performance from the girls and I’m looking forward to watching them play in the national finals.
- beat Greenhead college 4-0 (scorers: L Hunt, Wolstenholme, H Hunt, McPherson)
- beat Royal Grammar School, Newcastle 5-0 (Wolstenholme 2, H Hunt, McPherson, Hall)
- beat Kirkham Grammar 2-0 (H Hunt, Hall)
Lauren Hunt opened the scoring in the north finals with a magnificent shot in a 4-0 win against Greenhead before another one-sided affair against RGS Newcastle ended in a comfortable 5-0 victory.
A final group game against old rivals Kirkham proved to be a tighter match than the previous two, but goals from Sophie Hall and Holly Hunt secured the girls’ place in the semi-finals as pool winners.
- beat Cheadle Hulme 3-0 (Wolstenholme, McPherson, Spencer)
Goalkeeper Maya Gordon pulled off a string of fine saves during the opening stages of the semi-final against local rivals Cheadle Hulme, but as the match developed our girls settled and took control – with the final score of 3-0 being a true reflection of the game
- beat Sedbergh 1-0 (Wolstenholme)
A tough tie against Sedbergh, who had beaten our girls in the north-west round of the competition, was all that stood between Stockport Grammar and the north title, but the only goal of the game from Lily Wolstenholme was good enough to send the girls to the national finals and their supporters home delighted.
