Canoe club coached by top British paddler

Darren Cresser coaching canoe club

Top British Canoe Union coach Darren Cresser joined us at our canoe club to take a session and forge stronger links with the school’s top paddlers, like third year pupil and England Super Regional Squad member David Paterson.

Former elite paddler Darren began the session with games for those relatively new to the sport before he worked with our more advanced canoeists on specific slalom racing techniques.

Supporting future talent

Darren’s job with the British Canoe Union is to support future talent, and he came to Stockport Grammar already well aware that some of the sport’s brightest young hopes might come from our school.

Thirteen-year-old David Paterson is one of those canoeists, having already been picked for an England Super Regional Squad for junior athletes who show the potential and commitment to be in contention for a future Olympic place.

Over the last half-term break, David – younger brother of Premier Division paddler and Old Stopfordian Alastair (OS 2013) – was also lucky enough to be the youngest to train on the white water of the Olympic course at Lee Valley.
