With several of our hockey players being picked for England squads and training programmes and our U13s progressing in a national championship, it’s been a fine start to 2014 for the sport at Stockport Grammar.
England U18s and U16s
Emily Spencer has just discovered that she’ll be playing for England U18s again this year, when she’ll be joined by fellow school 1st XI star Holly Hunt (pictured with Emily last year) who makes the step up from the national U16s squad. Holly’s younger sister, 15-year-old Lauren, will also be representing her country having been selected for England U16s.
Keep an eye on the website for more news on the girls’ selection later this month.
England training programme
Meghan Myers and Maya Gordon have been selected onto England Hockey’s advanced apprenticeship in sport excellence programme, which aims to ensure that potential international players of the future are supported, motivated and inspired to maximise their talent and development.
The programme will see the pair attend five national training camps during the school holidays and 20 evening technical and tactical coaching sessions between now and April 2015, in which they will receive hockey coaching and off-the-pitch support including nutrition, psychology and lifestyle advice.
U13s: national schools mini hockey championships
Meanwhile, our U13s are through to the north-west final of the national schools mini hockey championships after they finished second in the competition’s Greater Manchester round.
On the day, the girls:
- beat Manchester High 1-0
- beat Sale Grammar 2-0
- beat Withington 1-0
- lost 1-0 to Altrincham Grammar

Congratulations to the squad – Tais Higham, Jess Moore, Dora Barlow, Maya Medagoda, Ellie Ward, Kitty Taylor, Aoife Teegan, Olivia Cleere, Amelia Davies and Annabel Tordoff – who will play their final in March.
1st XI: schools championships for girls
In the 11-a-side game, our 1st XI are busy preparing for their appearance in the schools championships for girls national finals on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th February, in which they will be playing for the title of champions of England.
It’s been an amazing start to 2014 for girls’ sport at Stockport Grammar, with:
- Katelyn Bergin, Maddie Crompton, Olivia Dykes and Hannah Jones excelling in the swimming pool
- the girls’ U15s cricket team winning the Stockport round of the Lady Taverners indoor cricket competition
