Maths quiz team win the double at MMU!

Pop maths quiz teams

Our mathematicians swept up the big prizes at Manchester Metropolitan University’s pop maths quiz, while a team of pupils are also through to the regional final of another competition.

Our two teams – from our third and fifth years – won both age categories of MMU’s pop maths quiz after working together to solve 20 problems which tested their knowledge of algebra, statistics, probability and other branches of mathematics.

Third year team

Our third year team were:

  • Katy Brown
  • Sam Howard
  • Max Mather-Harding
  • Seth Morley
  • Tony Wang

Fifth year team

Our fifth year team were:

  • Ben Adshead
  • Amy Bradley
  • Alice Coombes
  • Simon Fraser
  • Charles Longson
  • Amy Suddards

After an hour of intense quizzing, both our triumphant teams went home with book vouchers and – more importantly – the glory of winning the trophies!

“A lot of fun”

Maths teacher Mr Tony Cheslett, who accompanied the pupils on the day, was proud of our mathematicians:

Most importantly, everybody had a lot of fun taking part in the competition. The questions were tough but our pupils really enjoyed solving them.

To finish first in one of the age categories would’ve been impressive, but to win both of them is fantastic!

Team maths competition

Maths pupils have also been doing the school proud in the Further Mathematics Support Programme team maths challenge.

The team of fourth year pupils – Emily Howling, Joanna Brown, Daniel Jones and Paul Wong – finished second out of 23 schools in the regional heat and will now take part in the north-west final at Manchester University on Thursday 1st May.
