Readers award their own Man Booker prize

Girls reading J

Howard Jacobson’s dystopian love story J has been awarded our alternative Man Booker prize by a panel of sixth form readers.

Our pupils selected a shortlisted title to speak about, read extracts from and answer questions on in front of pupils and teachers during a literary lunch in the school library.

Winning cake!

All our sixth formers were really invested in their chosen books and articulately made their cases for each to win. Once all six had been presented, the audience of keen readers voted for the novel they thought deserved to take the prize.

The winners celebrate with cake

Liza Vul, Leah Allcock and Abi Roskilly’s engaging and eloquent presentation of Howard Jacobson’s J received the most votes, and the girls then had the honour of cutting our Man Booker-themed cake before chatting about all the books with the rest of the group over refreshments.

Borrow the books

Copies of the real Man Booker prizewinning book – The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan – are available to borrow, alongside the other shortlisted nominees, from the school library.
