Our hockey 1st XI have qualified for the national finals of the schools championships after winning the north of England title for a second year in a row.
A 2-0 win against the Grammar School at Leeds in the final saw the girls win the tournament and secure their place in the national finals at the Olympic Park in February.
“An absolute credit to the school”
A very proud head of hockey Miss Sharon Withington said:
The team are an absolute credit to the school. Meghan Myers is a fabulous captain who motivated the squad on the day and led by example.
To reach the national finals two years running is amazing. There is hard work to do before the date but we will go and compete with the best and if they play anything like they did today we will do very, very well.
Miss Withington also talked us through all of the girls’ games in Leeds, which saw them win five from five, score 17 and concede only one:
- beat the Grammar School at Leeds 3-1 (scorers: Wolstenholme, Stretton, Hunt)
- beat Royal Grammar School, Newcastle 3-0 (Wolstenholme, Hunt, Spencer)
- beat Altrincham Grammar 2-0 (Hunt, Spencer)
We started well in the first match but went behind to a goal against the run of play. And it was possibly the best thing that could happen to us as the girls lifted their game and ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Lily Wolstenholme, Sarah Stretton and Holly Hunt.
Royal Newcastle were our next opponents and, having changed into our white strip, we took to the field and were dominant, running out 3-0 winners with Holly Hunt, Emily Spencer and Lily Wolstenholme scoring the goals.
Local rivals Altrincham Grammar needed to win to reach the semi-finals and came out all guns blazing. But cool heads and patient play saw us forge a 2-0 lead which we held onto, with England players Holly Hunt and Emily Spencer scoring the goals once again.
- beat Wakefield Grammar 7-0 (Wolstenholme 4, Carroll, Burns, Spencer)
Wakefield Grammar had looked good in their section but were blown away by a fired-up Stockport Grammar team, who ran away 7-0 winners.
Lily Wolstenholme who has just joined the England national age groups squad scored four with further goals from Ellie Burns, Jess Carroll and Emily Spencer.
- beat the Grammar School at Leeds 2-0 (Hunt, Spencer)
The final saw us play Leeds again with a place at the national finals at stake.
Game plan in place we took to the field, passed the ball with confidence and played with composure. Emily Spencer opened the scoring and Holly Hunt popped another one in to secure the win!
A massive thanks to all of the supporters who came to Leeds to cheer the girls on.
The national finals will take place at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th February 2015.
