Our junior school sports stars have had a successful couple of weeks on dry land and in the water with achievements in tennis, swimming, cross country and canoeing.
Tennis and swimming
In tennis, year six pupil Mason Dace won both the Wrexham boys’ open and Shropshire open tennis tournaments over the half-term break, as well as a regional round of the David Lloyd Tennis All Stars competition.
Mason will now go on to play the winners of the other northern Tennis All Stars tournaments, with a place in the London finals at stake. We wish Mason every success.
In the pool, Ben Lavender from class Y3C didn’t just finish first in breaststroke in Marple Swimming Club’s annual gala but also broke a 20-year-old record in freestyle and another in backstroke!
Ben has also proved that he’s just as quick on land as he is in the water, finishing 10th in the latest Stockport schools cross country league race at Woodbank Park – in which Dominic Hanson from Y4S finished first!
Darcy Breen won the year three and four girls’ race from a field of over 100 runners with Katherine Alexander finishing 68th, while Daisy Keigher won the year five and six competition with Amy Jack and Lizzie Griffiths completing the run in 18th and 22nd place respectively.
Back in the water, brothers Sam and Alex Curwen both won their divisions in the famous Stone slalom canoeing event.
Sam came first in the J10 under-10s competition, while Senior School second year pupil Alex topped division three.
Despite both missing out on promotion by the smallest of margins, the boys’ wins put them both in fantastic positions ahead of next season’s competitions.
