Nine-year-old karter Harley Haughton was given the surprise of his life by newly-crowned Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton live in the BBC Radio 5 studio.
Year five pupil Harley won the Manchester and Buxton Kart Club Honda cadet championship at the Three Sisters in Wigan on the same day that Lewis Hamilton became Formula One world champion for the second time in Abu Dhabi.
Harley was being interviewed by Rachel Burden and Nicky Campbell on the 5 Live breakfast show when he said that it was his dream to meet Hamilton – and was left speechless when the man himself was brought into the studio to congratulate him on his win!
Hamilton told Harley how he has achieved success a year earlier than he had:
I won mine [first championship] when I was 10, so you’re even younger than me when I won my first – so you’ve got a bright future!
Harley was joined in the studio by his mechanic dad and Stopfordian Parents’ Association (SPA) chair Dave Haughton, who was obviously too starstruck to slip in a plug for this Saturday 29th November’s SPA Christmas fair!
Congratulations to Harley on his win, and thank you to the BBC and Lewis Hamilton for providing him with a day that we hope will help inspire him to emulate the new world champion!
