A day with Manchester Canoe Club helped our junior paddlers try the sport on the fast-flowing water of the River Goyt.
Amelia Rosenberg Powell, Morgan Broome, Lily Amet and Matthew Harbridge, all from year five, had a great time – having only tried canoeing once or twice before in the school pool!
Our paddlers were supported by fellow pupils Sam and Alex Curwen, who both won their divisions in the famous Stone slalom canoeing event earlier in the autumn term, who were able to offer their paddling expertise.
Canoeing with confidence
Club coaches Mark and Mike put the canoeists through their paces on the moving water and were impressed with what they saw:
Having only taken part in a few sessions in the school swimming pool with Mr Johnson I was concerned how they would cope, but they listened carefully to instructions and paddled with lots of confidence.
Our juniors were joined in the water by senior school pupils Joshua Mathew and Finley Nolan, who also took part in the session and demonstrated their ever-improving skills.
Canoe club takes place after school on Thursdays and is run by teacher Mr Malcolm Johnson, a former flat water professional who retired from the sport in 2004.
Mr Johnson has experience of competing in world championships, world cups and European championships and has commentated on the sport at the London 2012 and the 2004 Athens Olympics for Eurosport.
Extracurricular activity listings
Junior school children have dozens of other clubs to choose from, including the new circus skills and computer coding clubs.
Swimming, archery and climbing are some of the activities that take advantage of the first-class facilities in the senior school, while our junior school sports stars can now train all-year round on our brand new all-weather artificial surface.
Full club listings can be found on our junior school extracurricular activities page.
