Sportspeople celebrate remarkable year

1st XI hockey squad

Players, parents and coaches celebrated a remarkable year at our sports awards evening.

An incredible few months of sporting successes on the national stage saw our:

National hockey champions

Our hockey 1st XI won the national title for the first time in the school’s history with wins against Repton, Framlingham and Cranleigh at Olympic Park.

Head of hockey Miss Sharon Withington described the finals as “a very special couple of days” while head of PE and games Mr Chris Wright called it “one of the great days in Stockport Grammar School’s sporting history.”

Rugby: NatWest Schools Vase

Both our 1st XV and U15s rugby squads excelled in the NatWest Schools Vase with the 1st XV reaching the semi-finals at Allianz Park.

Despite defeat, director of rugby Mr Hugo Corbett said that “it was a fantastic achievement” and that the boys “deserved the opportunity to cap off what has been one of the most successful seasons for a 1st XV at Stockport Grammar.”

Our U15s squad also had an impressive run in the tournament, bowing out in the quarter-finals despite a hard-fought performance in a thrilling 25-17 defeat at Bishop Wordsworth’s.

Netball cup runners-up

Our U13s netballers can be proud of finishing second in Stockport Grammar’s first ever year in the Smile independent schools cup.

Bromsgrove, Withington and Bedford were all beaten during the girls’ cup run before a thrilling 26-23 semi-final defeat of Brentwood secured their place in the final.

PE teacher Miss Katrina Wilkinson said that she was proud of the squad who had been “a delight to work with” and had done “everything we asked of them.”

Our 1st and 2nd XI footballers have had some big wins this season, including 8-0 and 6-0 hammerings of Oldham Hulme.

A 3-0 cup win for our 1st XI against local rivals Cheadle Hulme was another highlight, as well as four wins for our teams against Bury Grammar.

The 1st XI rounded off their season with a game against the Old Stopfordians, with the school’s current players finishing on top with a 4-3 win.
