This week 12 sixth form pupils read the books from this year’s Man Booker shortlist and presented their opinions to an audience of voters.
Hanya Yanagihara’s story of human endurance and heartbreak A Little Life has been awarded our alternative Man Booker prize by the panel of sixth form readers.
Our pupils selected a shortlisted title to speak about. They presented their interpretations of the books before reading extracts and answering questions in front of pupils and teachers during a literary lunch in the school library.
Other popular titles included Chigozie Obioma’s The Fisherman and Anne Tyler’s A Spool of Blue Thread.
All our sixth formers had really invested in their chosen books and articulately made their cases for each to win. Once all six had been presented, the audience of keen readers voted for the novel they thought deserved to take the prize.
Our pupils then had the honour of cutting our Man Booker-themed cake before chatting about all the books with the rest of the group over refreshments.
