Sam Hall and Bella Platt were crowned winners at this year’s Stockport Grammar School MasterChef competition.
Third year Sam picked up the middle school trophy after his starter of scallop and sweetcorn puree with crispy parma ham followed by a main of rack of lamb with broccoli and stilton puree, charred cauliflower, crispy potatoes and red wine sauce wowed the judges.
First year Bella took the lower school crown with her main of glazed mirin salmon with rice and spring onions and dessert of lemon meringue pie seeing off the competition.
Sam secured the overall title and a £100 voucher for The Grill on the Alley after impressing their head chef Tom Poynter and manager Viv Taylor-Fletcher the most. He will also be able to sample his recipe when he visits the Manchester city centre restaurant as they will make the courses especially for him.
Second years Minnie Hall (main: seafood risotto, dessert: pavlova bites) and Fatimah-Zahra Hassan (main: moroccan chicken with lentils and rice, dessert: chocolate soufflé with raspberry sauce) came joint third in the overall competition.
Mrs Ruth Groves, head of food technology, said: “The standard of entries, as always, was really strong and the presentation of the dishes was of the highest standard ever so it was tough for our judges to pick the winners. Bella and Sam have performed well throughout the competition and massive congratulations to them.
“I would like to say well done to every single one of the pupils that entered – there were some very interesting, skilled and inventive dishes – and offer my thanks to Tom and Viv as well as members of staff for acting as judges.
“Also, many thanks to The Grill on the Alley for their generous voucher and for bringing their expertise to the final.”
This year’s competition kicked off with a food identification session where pupils had to look at and taste (if necessary) different foods and ingredients and write down what they thought they were.
Following the opening session, Bella Platt, Minnie Hall, Katie Hewetson, Fatimah-Zahra Hassan, Harry Brown, Rafe Howgate, Charlotte Jackson, Nayan Higgins, Rosie White, Ben Finlay-McDougall, Isabel Darbyshire, Jessica Ward, Thomas Brocklebank, Sam Hall, Kate Langton, Matthew Byle and Bella Elms made it through the semi-final.
