Head of Stockport Grammar School

Message from the Chairman of Governors, Mr Christopher Dunn

I am very pleased to announce that Dr Paul Owen has been appointed to the role of Head of Stockport Grammar School. Paul’s appointment will be effective from 1st September 2018, following the retirement of Mr Andrew Chicken.

The Governors conducted a careful and considered selection process with a very strong field of candidates. Paul is currently Head Master of Birkdale School in Sheffield and is a highly regarded educationalist with extensive experience of school leadership. He is exceptionally well qualified to lead Stockport Grammar School and to build on the School’s successes whilst maintaining our essential ethos.

Paul grew up in Hampshire, attending a large comprehensive school in Fleet before winning a scholarship to Winchester College.  He studied Physics at Cambridge University and stayed on to gain a PhD in Low Temperature Physics.  After a spell in industry, Paul discovered that he enjoyed teaching and held various academic and pastoral posts at Wellington School in Somerset.  Since 2010, he has been Head Master of Birkdale School.  He is married to Gail and has three children, two at university and one who will join Stockport Grammar School.  Paul still enjoys learning, particularly through reading, travel and theatre, and has wide interests in sport and music.

Paul said: “I am delighted to be joining Stockport Grammar School.  During the interview process, I very much enjoyed meeting staff and students at such a happy, ambitious and successful School.”

Andrew Chicken said: “I am very pleased to learn of the appointment of Dr Paul Owen, a widely respected Head who has had experience of leadership in both day and boarding schools. He is committed to the highest academic standards, excellence in pastoral care and preserving the social diversity that underpins the strength of our School. He will bring much to our community and I am looking forward to working with him over the months ahead.”
