Sporting Excellence

An impressive first half to the winter sports season has seen girls and boys excel as individuals and within their teams.


Congratulations to our Netballers on a 27-26 win against Haileybury School to take them to the quarter finals of the U13 Independent Schools Netball Cup. The match was in the balance until the last 30 seconds when SGS scored to win by one goal. The team’s path to the quarter finals saw victories against Bury Grammar School, Woodhouse Grove, Manchester High School and Altrincham Grammar School.

Fifty two girls enjoyed an action-packed weekend of netball and outdoor activities at Condover Hall. Seven teams from the school took part in the two day competition and we finished runners-up in the U13 and U14 age groups.

Talented players from across the Senior School are celebrating after being chosen to be part of a number of different squads.

Beth Taylor has been selected for Leeds Rhinos’ U17 Performance squad, whilst Channell Brown, Freya Noble and Libby Wolstenholme have been picked for Manchester Thunder Netball’s Youth Academy.

Channell and Libby have also been chosen to be part of the Cheshire County U15 and U14 squads respectively and Darcy Breen, Libby Goodman, Chloe Olajide and Libby Porter have been called up to the Greater Manchester U13 squad.


As the weather turned colder here, 37 pupils travelled to Portugal to enjoy 4 days playing rugby in slightly sunnier climes. Pupils from Fourth Year to Sixth Form participated in training and matches as well as enjoying samples of Portuguese culture and sight-seeing.


Some of our best rugby players have recently been selected for the Sale Sharks DPP (Developing Player Pathway).

Under 14 – Harry Reeder-Hirst, Oluwalayomi Phillips, Harry Brown, Tom Crouch, Ewan Curran, Jack Brown, Oliver Setchfield

Under 15 – William Woodside, Bradley Boyd, Chester Bowden, Panashe Munaiwa, Josh Taylor

Under 16 – Emilio Ramirez, Zak Sebouai, Oscar Elvin

The DPP is a joint initiative between Sale Sharks, the RFU and the CBs. It is designed to provide enhanced development opportunities for the best young players in the North West and ‘a first opportunity to identify players with the greatest potential to enter the pathway towards the professional game’.

The programme engages players aged 13-16 years old and runs from six centres across the North West into a schedule of delivery that complements school, club and county playing programmes.

Seventeen pupils attended the U12 Cheshire Rugby Festival held at Stockport Rugby Club on 21st November. The team enjoyed competing against five teams, with a play-off match to finish.


We enjoyed playing host to St Gregory’s College from Argentina for a couple of days as we faced them in hockey and rugby matches. Both games were keenly and closely contested and were an excellent workout for all of the players involved.


Competing under the SGS flag, Katelyn Bergin brought home the Gold medal for Under 17 Girls at the British Biathlon Championships. Her exceptional achievement saw Katelyn secure her win with a 30 second Personal Best on her run.


The 1st XI placed third in the North West Finals of the National Schools U18 tournament and narrowly missed reaching the North Finals for the fifth consecutive year having been runners up in the Greater Manchester round. The team were National Champions in 2015.

The U13s beat Rossall School 12-0 in the Third Round of the Independent Schools Cup. Talia Zelhof, Libby Porter and Amy Jack were the goal scorers.

Upper Sixth pupil Lily Wolstenholme was selected to take part in the Great Britain Hockey Elite Development Programme which is aimed at boosting medal chances for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and beyond. The programme was run by world class coaches and started with an induction camp at Lilleshall in October.


Upper Sixth pupil David Paterson has been busy following his selection for the Great British Canoeing team for the Junior/U23 World Championship and the Junior/U23 European Championship. He attended domestic and international training camps, took part in preparation races and spent time in the Team GB environment. He raced hard against the best junior athletes in Europe and the world and finished with impressive placings in the Men’s K1 events.


The U12 Girls’ football team won their first game of the season 7-2 against Stockport School. Darcy Breen got five of the goals with Chloe Smith scoring the other two. Emily Mills, Anna Howard, Anna Wilkinson and Priya Anand were very strong in midfield and defence and played some fantastic balls through to set up the goals. Special mention goes to Molly Atkinson Lamb for a superb performance in goal. The football season for the boys’ teams will commence after the Christmas break.
