Local young artists amaze at Year Five Art Competition

Now in its fifth year, the Stockport Grammar School Year Five Art Competition sponsored by Brewin Dolphin welcomed 119 entries from young artists from 17 local primary schools.

Based around the theme of ‘self-portrait’, entries ranged in creative style and size with different media including 2D and 3D entries. Artists and their families were invited to an exhibition evening to show their work to family and friends, take part in activities run by our Art department and discover the winners of the competition.

Head of Art Mr Richard Davies thanked all of the artists for creating such imaginative pieces and their teachers for taking the time to assist pupils in creation and entry. He commented: “I think it would be hard to find a more talented group of young artists than those who have taken part this year. Not only were we impressed by the quality of the work, but also by the range of media and techniques that have been employed so skilfully. Furthermore, it is clear that a wide range of artists have been researched and, importantly, understood in the development of the work.”

Fraser Wilson of Corrie Primary School won the competition with an eye catching self-portrait with fantastic detail. The runners-up were Macey Howarth of Lady Barn House School and Jocelyn Bromley of Gorsey Bank Primary School. Macey created a beautiful 3D textile project and Jocelyn impressed with her imaginative grid based patterned piece.

Mrs Sharon Palreyman teacher at Corrie Primary School said: “Our pupils were really excited to be at the exhibition and delighted to show their artwork to friends and family. All the entries were of an extremely high standard, so it was fantastic for Fraser to be chosen for the main prize.”

All of the pieces were fantastic and the entrants can feel proud of themselves for being chosen to represent their school at the competition. All artists went home with a ‘goody bag’ provided by sponsors Brewin Dolphin which included equipment to continue their enjoyment of art.
