Nicholson’s dash of spring secures the House Bake-Off Trophy

Fourth and Fifth Year pupils Katie Collier, Lydia Johnson, Phoebe Christodoulou and Emily Daniels were selected as the star bakers of this year’s House Bake-off competition.

Each house had to work together as a team with two members given an hour to bake the cakes and another two members given an hour to design the cakes.

Guest judge and Old Stopfordian Emma Caine (OS 1995), owner of Heatons Cakes and Member of the British Sugarcraft Guild, assisted the pupils in their final creations, offering advice and techniques on how to get the most out of their ingredients and designs.

Emma judged the creations by both taste and design. She was impressed with the level of planning and technique used in the design of the winning Nicholson cake, a spring lamb theme with sugar crafted flowers, a range of piping techniques and a delicious sponge! Emma noted that “planning is crucial in these situations and it was clear this team had clearly done their research.”

Emma gave feedback on each of the cakes and applauded all competitors noting that “each creation had its merits”.

Other pupils’ ideas ranged from a world map cake, a delicate Oreo mushroom cake, a pumpkin cake, a swan cake, a Moshi Monster cake and a Vernon House cake.
