Summer concert

The school is managed by a board of governors, who are the charity trustees and the directors of the company.

The governors are committed to:

  • providing value for money
  • recruitment of the best teachers
  • maintenance of the buildings and grounds to the highest possible standards of cleanliness and repair
  • developing the existing facilities
  • providing new buildings
  • keeping Stockport Grammar School at the forefront of education nationally
  • ensuring that the school is open to all who can benefit
  • a development programme which will increase funds available for bursaries and provide the new facilities required by this busy and thriving community
  • ensuring that the school should balance its traditional values with necessary innovation and development
  • providing all pupils with every opportunity to achieve all-round excellence

Mr C Dunn, MA: Chairman of Governors

Christopher Dunn was appointed Chairman of Stockport Grammar School Board of Governors in July 2014.

He joined the Board as the Ephraim Hallam Educational Foundation Nominative Member in March 2012 and became a Co-Optative Member of the Governing Body in October 2013.

Chris is an Old Stopfordian (1976) and read law at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge before qualifying as a solicitor. Chris is a partner in Gateley Plc specialising in Corporate Law, a former member of the Law Society Company Law Committee and former regional treasurer of the charity, Hope and Homes for Children.

Mr PA Cuddy, BA: Vice Chairman of Governors

Philip Adrian Cuddy was appointed to the Board of Governors of Stockport Grammar School in 1998 and became its Vice Chairman in 2009. He is a founder member of the Shaa Society.

Born in Stockport and a parent of a former SGS pupil, Philip is a solicitor who has now retired.  His 38 year career was spent working across the country in the Magisterial Service culminating in his appointment as the Justices’ Chief Executive for Stockport. He is a Past President of the Stockport Incorporated Law Society.

Mr FA Booth, FCA

Andrew Booth FCA was appointed to the Governing Body as a Co-Optative Member in March 2015.  Andrew is the current Chairman of the Finance Committee.

Andrew is an Old Stopfordian (1961). Qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1966 joining Price Waterhouse before becoming a partner in Booth Ainsworth, Chartered Accountants.

Former Chairman of the Manchester District Training Board for Chartered Accountants and ex-Chairman of the Vernon Building Society.  Andrew retired from practice in 2010 and is currently a non-executive Director of a Bakery Company.  

Mr P Britton, MBE, MA, MEd, FInstP

Philip Britton was appointed to the Governing Body as a Co-Optative Member in March 2013.  Philip is Chairman of the Education Committee and a member of the ICT Steering Group.

Philip is Headmaster of Bolton School Boys’ Division. He was brought up on Tyneside, took a first in physics at Oxford and did teacher training at Cambridge. He worked as physics teacher, Head of Physics and Deputy Head at Leeds Grammar School before moving to Bolton in 2008. In 2010 he was awarded an MBE for services to physics and is currently Vice President (Education) of the Institute of Physics where he has been much involved in physics education, encouraging teachers to encourage the next generation of physicists.

Mr AP Carr, MA (Cantab)

Paul Carr joined the Board as the Ephraim Hallam Educational Foundation Nominative Member in October 2013.

Paul is an Old Stopfordian (1971) and read Classics and Law at Selwyn College, Cambridge before being called to the Bar. Paul was formerly Justices’ Clerk and Director of Legal Services for Essex Magistrates’ Courts before being appointed to the Bench.  He is now a judge of the Family Court.

Miss SE Carroll, BA

Sarah Carroll, OS 1981-83, has been a Governor of Stockport Grammar School since 2003 and is also a Member of the Finance Committee.

A banker by profession, Sarah has held a number of senior roles at UBS, J P Morgan and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, including Managing Director of industrial clients.

Sarah is married and lives in London and East Sussex. She is also a member of the Finance Committee of Nottingham Trent University and is actively involved in a number of charitable organisations.

Prof. J Dainton, MA, DPhil, FInstP, FRSA, FRS

John Dainton joined the Governing Body in March 2009, and is a Member of the Education Committee.

John is Sir James Chadwick Professor of Physics at the University of Liverpool and an experimental physicist whose research is concerned with understanding the structure of matter in terms of its constituent quarks, leptons and bosons and their interactions. His work makes use of particle accelerators at centres such as CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.  John headed up the Particle Physics group in Liverpool for a number of years after returning from a period as a leading scientist at the DESY Laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. 

John has experience in university education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, is a Liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Company with whom the school is closely associated, and is the founding Director of the Cockcroft Institute. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Mr PL Giblin, MA, MEd

Peter Giblin joined the Board of Stockport Grammar School as The Teaching Staff Nominative Member in October 2010 and was reappointed in 2013. He is a member of The Education Committee and has been a member of The Management Committee since November 2014.

Peter read Physics at Hertford College, Oxford and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Science Education from King’s College, London. He was appointed Head of Physics at Stockport Grammar School in 1988 and retired from his post in 2010 after 39 years teaching. He also had responsibility for the school timetable for a number of years and, after retirement, worked as a Curriculum Planning Consultant.

Mrs S Lansbury, LLB

Samantha Lansbury was appointed to the Board of Governors of Stockport Grammar School in 2011. She is a member of the Management Committee and External Relations Committee.

Samantha is a solicitor and held a partnership in private practice before becoming a Head of Legal in industry. She is married to an Old Stopfordian (1988) and has two children who are current pupils at the school.

Mr K Lansdale, MRICS

Keith Lansdale joined Stockport Grammar School Board of Governors in 2002, and is a member of the Management and Building Committees.

After attending Stockport School, Keith read architecture at Bristol University before qualifying as a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.  He has worked in the construction and commercial development sector in the North West for many years, and is currently a Director of a number of property companies.  He is married with two children, and lives in Disley.

Mr PH Locke, BVSc, MRCVS

Harvey Locke was appointed to the Governing Body as a Co-Optative member in June 2002. He has served on the Management Committee and External Relations Committee and currently sits of the Information and Consultation Committee and the ICT Steering Group.

Harvey is an Old Stopfordian (1954-1964) and qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Liverpool in 1969. After a period in farm animal practice, Harvey returned to Stockport and set up his small animal practice which has grown to a 25 vet, 7 centre practice in the South Manchester area.

He retired from the practice partnership in 2010 to become President of the British Veterinary Association. Harvey has 2 daughters who both attended the school, Rachel (OS 2002) and Helen (OS 2004). Helen has followed Harvey into the veterinary profession.

Mr P Milner, BA

Paul Milner was appointed as a Co-Optative Member to the Stockport Grammar School Board of Governors in June 2011 and joined the Management Committee in December the same year.  In 2015 he joined the External Relations Committee and became the Governor Liaison with the SPA.

Paul spent nearly 30 years with PZ Cussons retiring in 2011 from the post of Global Human Resources Director.  He has been the Head Trustee of the Zochonis Charitable Trust since 2013.

Dr EM Morris, MB, ChB, DCh

Margaret Morris joined the Stockport Grammar School Board of Governors as a Co-optative Member in June 1998. She is a member of the Management Committee and the Education Committee.  Margaret is the Governor with special responsibility for Safeguarding and Child Protection.

Margaret studied Medicine at Manchester University. After qualification and initial training she worked in Community Paediatrics in Manchester working mainly with children with Special Needs.

Mr AC Simpson, BSc, ACA

Adrian Simpson was appointed to the Board of Governors as a Co-optative member in March 2015. He is member of the Finance Committee.

Adrian read accountancy and law at the University of Southampton.  He is a Chartered Accountant who trained with KPMG.  Adrian is the Finance Director of a local construction company.

His daughter, Laura, is a former pupil who started in the junior school reception class.  A leaver in 2011, she is currently at university studying medicine.

Mr RP Yates, FIMI

Roger Yates joined the Board in April 1993 as the Nominative Governor of the Old Stopfordians’ Association and became a co-optative member of the Governing Body in 1999.  He is a member of the Management and Finance Committees and is Chairman of the Building Committee. Roger is also a Trustee of the Ephraim Hallam Educational Foundation.

Roger has been in business many years and is a Fellow of the Institute of the Motor Industry.  He brings to the Board his general business experience in Management, Finance and Project Management.

Mr JA Shackleton, MA

John Shackleton was appointed to the Board as the Old Stopfordians’ Association Nominative Governor in December 2015.

John spent four years at Loughborough Colleges/University before returning to Stockport Grammar School in 1977 as a member of the staff in the Senior School.  John became Deputy Head at Newcastle Preparatory School in the early 1990s and following that has been appointed Headmaster of four independent preparatory schools; Royal Grammar Junior School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Fettes College Preparatory School in Edinburgh, King Henry VIII Junior School in Coventry and Hallfield School in Birmingham. 

John was a member of the athletics squad at Loughborough in the Mid 1970s and was selected for Great Britain.  John played lacrosse for the Old Stopfordians and represented England on occasions between 1978 and 1992.

Mr JMR Lee, BA, MBA, DipM

Jonathan Lee was appointed to the Board as a Co-optative Governor in October 2016.

An OS (1976-1983), he read geography and then gained an MBA at Hatfield College, Durham, followed by a marketing diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is currently completing an MSt in Building History at Wolfson College, Cambridge.

Jonathan worked for international telecommunications companies and investment banks before setting up a number of privately owned sales and marketing consultancies and property businesses. He has trusteeships with the Hatfield Trust, the Postcode Culture and Equality Trusts and the Construction History Society, where he is Honorary Treasurer. Jonathan is a Liveryman with the Worshipful Company of Woolmen.

Mrs C S Muscutt, BA

Chris Muscutt joined the Board as the Teaching Staff Nominative Governor in March 2017.  

Chris studied German and French at Sheffield University. She was appointed to the teaching staff in 1982 and became Head of German in 1987.

During her time at the school she was Head of Vernon House, ran many of the outdoors trips and was Chair of the Staff Common Room.  She stepped down as Head of Department in 2011 and took on the newly created role of Co-Curricular Co-ordinator.  She retired in 2016.
