Bursaries and Scholarships

Senior School and Sixth Form bursaries

Limited assistance with Senior School and Sixth Form fees may be available to parents whose income is less than £59,950.

The level of assistance is based on the:

  • child’s performance in the entrance exam
  • amount of financial assistance required (based on an annual declaration of income and assets)

Assistance towards the cost of school uniform, meals and travel costs (for children who live more than three miles from the school) may also be available.

Bursaries are only available for pupils going into First Year and into the Sixth Form.

Eligibility

Parents whose income to 6th April 2024 is more than £59,950 will not qualify for assistance. Parents whose income is less than £27,000 may be offered full remission of fees.

Between these two figures there are a range of means-tested awards that will require some proportion of parental contribution.

Apply for a bursary

Please tick the appropriate box on the application form.

You will be sent a declaration of Income form after your child has sat the entrance exam and has achieved a score that may qualify for financial assistance. The form will require:

  • A declaration of your income for the year ending 5th April 2023
  • An estimate of your income for the fiscal year 2023 to 2024
  • Details of savings and other assets as at 31st December 2023

The form must be returned by 2nd February 2024.

Home visit

Members of our Senior Management Team will make a selection of home visits to check and discuss details of the application. These will take place week commencing 12th February 2024. If you are selected, you will be contacted by the Bursar’s Secretary to arrange a suitable appointment.

Offer of a place

If your child is successful, he/she/they will receive an offer of a place, with the amount of bursary awarded, on the agreed date of offers.

The letter will inform you of the provisional level of bursary award (if you qualify on financial grounds) in terms of your contribution towards fees. You should then follow the instructions relating to your acceptance of that place.

The school has insufficient resources to satisfy the demand for assistance each year and unfortunately this means we cannot offer a bursary to every child for whom an application is made.

Length of bursary

Bursaries continue for every year in which your child remains at the school subject to the conditions of a bursary award.

We may ask you to pay a greater proportion of the fees if your income should rise, but there is no obligation on our part to increase the percentage should your income fall. In the latter situation each particular case will be judged on its merits.

Each summer you will be asked to complete a new declaration of income form and to provide details of your income for the previous fiscal year.

Shaa scholarships

We offer a small number of scholarships each year based on outstanding performance in the entrance examination.

A Shaa scholarship gives a reduction of £1,000 on each full year’s fees and is held for the pupil’s first five years in the senior school, subject to an annual progress review.

Application and eligibility

You do not need to apply for a Shaa scholarship and they are not subject to a means test.

Offers of Shaa scholarships will be made in the letter sent to parents in March giving the outcome of the entrance examination.

The scholarships were introduced in 2012 to commemorate the 525th anniversary of the school’s foundation by Sir Edmond Shaa, Mayor of London and Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company.

Music scholarships

  • worth up to 25% of the school fees

Two music scholarships are available each year to cover up to 25% of the school fees.
