Business Studies

We aim to:

Provide a stimulating and dynamic educational experience in our teaching of Business Studies. In addition to providing high quality academic support, we aim to foster a sense of critical thinking and discovery in our pupils, standing them in good stead for the challenges of A Level study and in higher education.

What staff and facilities are available in the department?

There are two full-time teachers in the department. One of our teaching rooms has a suite of networked computers, enabling pupils to explore the considerable IT potential within the subject. Both classrooms have interactive whiteboards and multimedia facilities. We also have a stock of Economics periodicals.

What does the Business Studies course involve?

Business Studies is dynamic and challenging, drawing on a number of specialist fields including management, marketing, economics, accountancy, and operations management, to produce an integrated course which is highly relevant to the modern world. The course enables pupils to develop a critical understanding of how organisations work, best practice in business, the markets they serve and how they relate to the external environment. It also develops the awareness that business behaviour can be studied from the perspective of a multitude of stakeholders including consumers, shareholders, managers, employees and society.

We follow the AQA syllabus. At AS Level pupils undertake modules in Planning & Financing a Business, and Managing a Business. At A2 our study deepens to give consideration to strategic thinking in business and analysis of how external factors such as the economy, government legislation, and social trends, affect business performance and decision-making. During the A2 year, we study pre-release case study material on an aspect of international business in the global context.

Business Studies is suited to pupils who possess good written skills and are competent with arithmetic and in numerate techniques. In addition, you will need to be able to analyse business scenarios from a number of perspectives, using the theory taught on the course.

How useful will Business Studies be to me?

Business Studies is suitable for a wide range of pupils. Whilst the course will not necessarily teach you how to get rich, it is nonetheless useful for anyone considering a career in business and a wide range of professions including accountancy, law, finance and indeed any career that demands an understanding of the wider world. Many of our pupils go on to pursue degrees in finance, management, marketing and other related fields of business.
