Stockport Grammar School's Fifth Year (yr 11) group of 160 pupils have plenty to celebrate as they collect another record-breaking set of GCSE results. The boys and girls have gained 71% of all grades at A* and A, with a third of the entire year group being awarded straight A* and A grades in all ten subjects taken. 92% netted grades between A* and B and over 98% of all grades were between A*-C.

Headmaster Mr Andrew Chicken said "I am delighted for all our girls and boys. They have achieved outstanding results and have contributed greatly to the wider life of the school too."

Top mathematician

Suzanna Eames, who has gained 9 A*s and one A told us: "I am really happy. These are good results and just what I was hoping for". Suzanna has been credited with being amongst the 'ablest young mathematicians in the country'. Following her performance in the UK Mathematics Trust Summer School and competitions during the year, Suzanna has been selected, as one of only 18 students nationwide, to attend their training camp at The Queen's College, Oxford next week. Here, alongside 17 other top mathematicians, Suzanna will receive intensive , mathematical problem-solving training, with a view to her potentially being selecting to represent the UK in future international Olympiads. As well as her outstanding academic achievements, she also finds time to pursue her musical talents, having attained Grade 8 piano and Grade 5 violin. Last week, Suzanna's brother, Nick, celebrated his achievements of 2 A*s and an A in Maths, Further Maths and Physics A Levels, enough to secure him his place at Cambridge University this Autumn.

Royal National College for the Blind

The pressure of taking GCSEs is huge for all pupils, not least for Richard Howarth who has taken 7 GCSEs, achieving five A*s or As. Richard, who is blind, told us "I feel just fine - it's nice to get my results at last, and they're good results!" Richard's mother, full of pride, added "They are great results!". Richard is not only celebrating this fantastic achievement, but has truly embraced all that school life has to offer at Stockport Grammar School, performing in the school production of Les Miserables, playing the flute in the School Orchestra and being a tenor vocal soloist in Dido and Aeneas. Away from his musical participation, Richard is a keen golfer. His commitment to the school was recognised in July's annual Speech Day with the award of the L.S. Goddard Memorial Prize for Service and Contribution to School Life. He also recently gained outstanding results in his European Computer Driving Licence. Richard will pursue his passion for computer programming and music as he goes to the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford to complete further studies in Media Production and ICT next month.

Further successes

Harry Allport, who achieved 9 A*s and 1 A is "extremely, extremely happy!". He will go on to study Maths, Physics Chemistry and French in the Sixth Form at Stockport Grammar School. Harry won the English Literature prize at this year's Speech Day and is on the school football team. When asked what he values most about his time at Stockport Grammar School, Harry told us "Just knowing that I'm at a top Grammar School; The support you get from the teachers is amazing. We have learnt great exam techniques."

Shelby Whyatt, who gained 10 straight A*s will be going for Duke of Edinburgh's Gold award in Stockport Grammar School's Sixth Form, having already completed her Bronze and Silver Awards. As well as Latin American dancing, she works as a volunteer, preparing window displays in Stockport's Cancer Research UK shop.

Emily Ralston, another straight A* pupil, has ambitions to take on the world of journalism, and has already got her own slot on her local Canalside community radio. Emily also plays hockey for the school.
