Rehearsals continue apace for the Senior School’s production of the hit Broadway musical Godspell. Running from the 19th – 22nd March and involving over 70 pupils, the show promises the usual SGS high standard of drama, music and visual spectacle. Tickets will be on sale from Monday 27th January. Please download a ticket request form here and return to Mrs Johnson in the Music department with your payment. Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis and cannot be reserved without payment.
Upper Sixth Form pupils wishing to request AS re-sits should return their completed forms to Mrs Robinson in the Exams Office as soon as possible, and by Friday 14th February at the latest. Spare forms are available from the Exams Office.
Pupils’ personalised GCSE and AS/A2 timetables will be available at the end of this term. GCSE timetables will be sent to home addresses and AS/A2 timetables will be distributed via Form Tutors in school. The last day of teaching for Fifth Year and Lower Sixth pupils is Friday 2nd May and for Upper Sixth is Tuesday 6th May. Lower Sixth pupils will return to lessons on Monday 16th June; pupils sitting the Further Maths paper on 16th June, will sit the exam and then return to lessons. Saatchi Gallery/Deutsche Bank Art Prize
Twelve of Stockport Grammar’s top artists have had their stunning work entered for the Saatchi Gallery/Deutsche Bank art prize for schools. The prestigious prize is open to schools around the world, with £10,000 of art equipment vouchers going to the winner’s school and £2,000 to the artist. To view the artwork click here.
RS/Philosophy & History Trip to Poland
The Religion & Philosophy and History departments have launched their joint trip to Krakow in Poland for current GCSE Fourth Year RS and History pupils. The visit will take place 5th – 7th December 2014. The cost will be approximately £420 per person. If you wish your child to participate, please complete and return the slip, together with a deposit of £120, to the Main School office by Friday 21st February. First Year pupil Katelyn Bergin has been selected for the county swimming team after she achieved her first national qualifying time for 100m backstroke (1 minute 11 seconds) at a recent event in Sheffield.
Mark and Annabel Tordoff were crowned national junior ballroom and latin dance champions for the second year running with their team from Stardust Dance School in Glossop. As defending 2012 champions, they were competing in the UK Supadance National Grand Finals in Blackpool, after winning the 2013 Northern Area Finals. Mark and Annabel also achieved 5th place overall as an individual couple.
As well as preparing for Stockport Grammar’s appearance in the Schools Championships for Girls national final, First XI hockey star Holly Hunt is busy training for her place in the Maxinutrition Hockey 5s final at Wembley Arena, with her club Bowdon Hightown. Fifth Year Language Revision Sessions
Fifth Year pupils are being offered the opportunity to receive extra support in languages. The following sessions are available:
Role-play practice with Mr Lorentz in L9 Wednesdays at 1.10pm.
Listening practice with Mr Wilson in L7 Thursdays at 1.10pm.
Role-play practice with Frau Christmann in L5 Mondays at 12.30pm.
Listening practice with Mrs Morgan in L9 Fridays at 1.10pm.
Listening and reading practice with Mrs Psaila-Harris in L9 on Thursdays at 1.10pm.
General MFL help is available to all year groups on Fridays at 12.30pm in L1 with Miss Gibson. Pupils can attend weekly, or on a drop-in basis.
Third Year Parents’ Evening
A reminder that Third Year pupils are expected to attend the Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 18th February. The GCSE options choices form, which can be found at the back of the Middle School prospectus, should be handed to form tutors by February 20th.
During February the English department and the Library will be hosting ‘SGS Lit Fest 2014’. Pupils in the Lower School are invited to take part in a series of competitions (Alternative Book Cover, Poetry by Heart and book quizzes), as well as activities celebrating books and reading. These include:
Author, illustrator and animator, Curtis Jobling will be in school on Friday 7th February. He will give a talk on animation and sign books in the Library at lunch time before giving further interactive author talks to pupils in the afternoon. If your child would like a signed copy of one of his books, books can be purchased at £6.50 in advance. Payment should be taken to the Library or Mrs Moss in the Woodsmoor office.
Performance Poet Tony Walsh will perform to pupils at lunch time in the Library and to English classes during the afternoon on Wednesday 19th February.
Mr Duncan Toms from the Macclesfield Astronomical Society will be our guest speaker on Tuesday 7th February at 1pm. The café is open to all pupils from the Fourth Year and above.
Book at Bedtime
Pupils are invited to re-live the magic of the bedtime story and join us for a riveting read between 3.50-8pm in the Library on Friday 14th February. Pupils may bring sleeping bags/cushions and change into ‘cosy-wear’ at the end of the school day to make themselves comfortable and to recreate a bedtime atmosphere. Food and drinks will be provided during the course of the evening. Signed consent forms should be returned to the Library or Mrs Moss in Woodsmoor by Friday 7th February.
This year the Classics department is continuing its run of productions of Greek tragedies with HisTroy, to be performed in the Hallam Hall on Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th and Friday 7th February, beginning at 7.30pm (please note that this is different from the 7pm start stated on the school calendar). If you would like tickets, which are priced at £3 for students and £5 for adults, then please return the form, via your child’s form tutor or to Mr Thorley in Classics, together with cash or a cheque made payable to Stockport Grammar School. Stopfordian Parents’ Association meetings take place throughout the year in the Upper Sixth Form Common Room. The date of the next meeting is Monday 10th February at 7.30pm. The main topic for discussion will be the Quiz Night. All parents of pupils at the school are automatically members of the SPA and are warmly invited to the meetings.
