Controlled assessment

For GCSE subjects, controlled assessment has replaced coursework. Pupils are given the opportunity to carry out some independent research within a subject and to organise their findings into a final submission in formal (or controlled) sessions.

The format of the final submission varies according to the subject and pupils will be given plenty of subject specific guidance from their class teachers.

The formal sessions may take place during the normal lesson time for that subject or may be organised at different times.

Although pupils will often be allowed to use notes and / or other materials that they have previously prepared, in all other ways pupils’ are expected to behave as if they were in a public examination.

For 2011 – 2012 the following subjects have a controlled assessment element:

  • Art
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Classics
  • DT
  • Geography
  • German
  • History
  • Home Economics
  • ICT
  • Music
  • PE
  • Spanish
  • Textiles

Coursework

All pupils will continue to submit coursework for their IGCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications.
