Rugby First XV win inaugural Ben Stollery Challenge Cup

The Rugby First XV won 40-27 against Manchester Grammar School in the inaugural Ben Stollery Challenge Cup held at Stockport Rugby Club.

A crowd of over 300 gathered to watch the teams play on the SRUFC 1st team pitch. Tries from Max Wood, Thomas Power, George Chatterton, Harry Mellor, Louis Jones and Michael Sidebottom, along with five conversions by Max Lederwerg secured the match.

The match was followed by the opportunity to watch England v Fiji on the big screen in the opening game of the Rugby World Cup.

The Challenge Cup will be contested each year in memory of Ben Stollery and to maintain awareness for teenage boys of the risk of depression.

A former Stockport Grammar pupil, Ben was a talented rugby player who had represented the school as a promising No. 8. He was a close friend and colleague of a number of last year’s SRUFC Under 18 players. Tragically Ben took his own life earlier this year after a period of clinical depression. The trophy has kindly been donated by a number of SRUFC parents.
