Winter Concert brings warmth to a frosty night

Our younger senior school musicians had the opportunity to display their talent at the Winter Concert with a fusion of classical and modern music from groups and ensembles. For some it was the first time they had performed before an audience.

The concert was opened by the Junior Percussion Ensemble conducted by Mr Landon. They started with one of Mr Landon’s own pieces ‘Ha!’ and finished with ‘Toccata in D Minor’, which featured an outstanding performance on the xylophone by fourth year pupil Jacob Noakes.

The Guitar Group played ‘Sunshine of your Love’ and the haunting theme from ‘The Godfather’. They were followed by the Beginners Brass Ensemble performing ‘Mini March’ and ‘March in D Minor’.

Senior Percussion Ensemble treated the audience to a rousing medley of cartoon favourites before Junior Band, conducted by Mr Kennedy, closed the first half with ‘Infinity and Beyond’ by Sparke and ‘Two Dances from the Capriol Suite’ by Warlock.

The second half began with Second Orchestra giving an accomplished performance of two pieces by Strauss, ‘Radetzky March’ and ‘Die Fledermaus’, conducted by Mrs Short.

The Beginner Woodwind Ensemble, conducted by Mr White, played ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘New World Symphony’.

Vox, an all-girl singing group, conducted by Mrs Matthews, gave a soaring rendition of ‘(Something Inside) So Strong’  and ‘Strong’ from ‘Cinderella’.

The evening concluded with the debut concert performance by the newly formed Sax Quartet of ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Wallace & Gromit’.
