Our Under 15 and Under 16 rugby players jetted off on a tour of Portugal just before term ended as they swapped cold winds for winter sun.
After landing in the southern European country, the boys soon made their way to the picturesque coastal resort town of Cascais, just west of Lisbon, where they walked along the seafront and trained on the beach.
The following day saw them explore the town’s city centre in the morning before taking to the field to face two local teams, Belas and Sporting, in the afternoon. It was a successful start to the tour with victories secured in both games.
After an early breakfast the next day, the touring party headed to Lisbon to explore the city and made some purchases at the Centro Colombo.
In the evening their focus turned to another sport, football, as they watched the game between Benfica and Estoril at the iconic Estádio da Luz.
The penultimate day of the tour saw the boys face Belenenses where they got to pit their wits against their prestigious opponents in the settings of Agronomia RFC.
The final day was spent travelling before the players settled into the last week of term leading up to Christmas.
Talking about the trip, Head of Rugby Mr Hugo Corbett said: “It was a fantastic tour and we could not have asked for any more in terms of the welcome that we received from the Portuguese rugby community and the hospitality that we received.
“The rugby was of a good standard and showed our boys what it is like to play against international opposition and how the game is played in a different country.
“On a personal note I would like to thank the staff that gave up their time to come on the trip, the parents for supporting the trip and the boys for their behaviour and demeanour throughout, they were great ambassadors for the school.”
We would like to thank Rhino Events, Squire Patton Boggs, The Mere, Havas Lynx and Lockton for their generous sponsorship of the kits for the tour. Thanks also go to Paladin Sports who supplied the kit and to Move Travel from Portugal.
