Roald Dahl’s books brought to life in Lower School production

Lower School pupils brought to a close a weekend of energetic rehearsing with a vibrant and fun filled performance of their production ‘Witches, Twits and Other Hits: A smorgasbord of Roald Dahl’.

The production was brought together in just four days by Head of Drama Mrs Alison Moffatt, with the pupils knowing nothing of the stories they would be staging or the characters they were playing until they started rehearsing.

Some of Roald Dahl’s most loved books were brought to life in the production; ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’, ‘James and The Giant Peach’, ‘The Witches’, ‘The Twits’ and ‘The BFG’.

The stories were then woven together by Mrs Moffatt through the use of the character Matilda and her school friends whose enthusiasm for Roald Dahl’s books brought the stories alive.

Matilda and her friends talked about each story and the message that Roald Dahl was teaching. Friendship, courage, karma, always having hope and never giving up were all themes highlighted to the audience.

Costumes, props, lighting and sound were all also created and set up from scratch over the one weekend. Miss Jess Perkins drew together a team of pupils to help bring the amazing characters and stories to life and the Lighting and Sound Club used all of their experience to seamlessly enhance the show with lighting and music.

The cast of near 50 pupils were thrilled by their achievement and took to heart the messages about being a good person and striving to do good that are embedded in all of Roald Dahl’s books.

The programme quoted Roald Dahl’s words to inspire the wonderful cast: “…above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
