Fourth Year pupil Kate Langton and Second Year Bella Platt were the winners of this year’s MasterChef competition.
Kate picked up the Middle School competition crown with her main of squash, carrot and almond puree, roast hake and radish pickle and a dessert of choux pastry swans with a toffee sauce. She won a cup, certificate and a £100 voucher for The Grill on the Alley. She will also be able to sample her recipe when she visits the Manchester city centre restaurant as they will make the courses especially for her.
Bella won the Lower School contest with a main of pine nut crusted lamb medallion, crispy kale, sweet potato, beetroot mint jelly balls and red wine jus and a cinnamon figs served with ginger mascarpone and biscuit crumb dessert. Her victory, which is her second in two years, also saw her pick up a cup and certificate.
The competition, which is in its eleventh year, was judged by The Grill on the Alley’s Business Development Manager Ms Lianne Williams with added input from Head of Food Technology Mrs Ruth Groves and teachers Miss Hodkinson, Mr Young, Mr Ehegartner, Mrs Marshall and Mr Thorley.
Middle School winner Kate said: “The competition was fun and exciting and I was really pleased to have won. The meal took quite a bit of planning, especially the choux pastry swans, and it was great to see it pay off.
“My family and I are going to The Grill on the Alley as an after-exam treat and I am looking forward to having my meal cooked for us by the chefs in the restaurant.”
Lower School winner Bella said: “When I was told I had won I was ecstatic as it had been such an amazing experience doing the competition again.
“The standards had risen since last year and the final was very intense but everybody was positive and friendly. My best friend was my washer upper and we supported each other and she kept me calm and collected.
“My meal was a lot more complicated than last year as I had a lot more elements, but I was organised and everything was done in order.”
Speaking about this year’s contest, Mrs Groves said: “Every year I think that the standard of the entries cannot get any better but this year they surpassed my expectations again. For my final year of organising this competition before I take early retirement, I was very impressed by the exceptionally high standard of all the dishes produced.
“It was a real struggle for Lianne to choose the winners and it took nearly 45 minutes of deliberations to do this! Thank you to all the ‘foodie’ staff who have supported the competition over the years, without them, pupils would not have achieved all they have done.
“A very big well done to everyone who took part and thank you for making my last final a really memorable one.”
