A magical musical term of concerts and recitals has come to a close with Senior and Junior School pupils and their parents venturing to St George’s Church for Carol Services shining with Christmas joy.
The evening brought together pupils, parents, governors, staff and Old Stopfordians for an evening of congregational carols, readings by pupils and performances by the school’s choral groups.
Chamber Choir’s opening rendition of ‘Gaudete’ was followed by a beautiful solo by First Year Mia Krywonos who sang the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’.
The whole congregation then rose to join in the carol, before the Bidding from Headmaster Dr Paul Owen and Chaplain Rev Liz Leaver and a reading from Head Boy Murray Jallands.
The Chorus then sang ‘Sussex Carol’ and the Chamber Choir delivered ‘Magnificat in D’, interspersed with readings from Third Year Niamh Warburton and Head Girl Megan King and carols ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’.
First Year Tom Farrelly and Fourth Year Harry Brown also delivered readings, the Junior Chamber Choir performed ‘Still, Still, Still’ and ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain’ and the audience warmed up their vocal chords again with ‘Good King Wenceslas’ and ‘God Rest You Merry Gentlemen’.
Lower Sixth pupil Sarah Callow and Dr Owen gave the final readings, and the Chamber Choir delivered ‘O Magnum Mysterium’. While the congregation sang ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’, candles were lit all around the church as the service moved towards its atmospheric finale.
The Chaplain offered prayers for Christmas and delivered the Blessing before the congregation rose for one last time to sing ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’. The service concluded with Bach’s ‘O Little One Sweet’ by the Chamber Choir.
Headmaster Mr Tim Wheeler welcomed a full congregation to the Junior School Carol Service on the final evening before the Autumn Term ended.
After the opening congregational carol ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, pupil Finn read ‘The First Christmas’. Year Three and Four singers then performed ‘Now, Now is The Time to Sing’ before Lauren Storey and Owen Morriss delivered the reading ‘An Angel Tells Of The Birth Of Jesus’.
Before the next carol, the Year Three and Four Choir sang ‘Christmas Calypso’ and the Junior Choir performed ‘All In The Morning’ whilst Roman Deans read ‘The Birth Of Jesus’ and Leon Porter and Zahra Raja-Zahid delivered the reading ‘Nativity’.
Following ‘Silent Night’, James Petch and Amelie Joubert read ‘The Shepherds and the Angels’ and Humaira Gurjee and Tabitha Bloor delivered ‘Wise Men come to visit Jesus’. Year Five and Six singers sang ‘Carol of the Children’ and ‘Tonight’ whilst Abigail Sullivan and Oliver Feehan led prayers.
Chaplain Reverend Liz Leaver conducted the Christmas Blessing before the service concluded with carol ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’.
Well done to all the children involved in the service, their enthusiasm and spirit created an uplifting atmosphere filling the audience with Christmas cheer. The evening was rounded off with festive refreshments.
