Congratulations to former pupil Holly Hunt (OS 2015), who has been selected in the Great Britain Hockey women’s squad to face New Zealand, Australia and China in the FIH Pro League.
Holly, who has recently returned from a three match series in sunny Alicante with Great Britain’s Elite Development Programme, said; “I am absolutely delighted to be included in the squad for the first group of Pro League games. Having been involved in the Elite Development Programme for the past couple of months it was a big surprise to then be selected for the senior team, however I am really looking forward to the challenge and hoping to learn a lot throughout the trip.”
Sharon Withington, Head of Hockey at SGS, reflected; “Holly was an outstanding and very influential player whilst at Stockport Grammar School. She was selected for the First XI whilst still in the Under 14s. She was three times a National Finalist and scored several of the goals when we were crowned champions. Whilst at Stockport Grammar School she played her club hockey for the National League side – Bowdon Hightown – and was awarded the Young Player of the Year Award by the Hockey sportswriters’ panel.
When she was at school, she was selected for England at U16, U18 and U21 level and since leaving she has played in the Development squad. We are now delighted and proud to see her chosen for the full England squad, her England shirts hang proudly on the Sports Hall corridor. Well done, Holly.”
Stockport Grammar School continues to promote success in hockey, with the last academic year seeing our U13 team reach the National Finals. Lucy Stead, who was part of the U13 team, has now been selected to join the UK Lions U14 girls’ hockey squad following successful trials. Lucy travelled to Malaga with the team in December for an intensive coaching course and games against teams from other countries.
2018 also saw the school welcome Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE, Olympic Gold and Bronze Medal winning hockey player and former England Captain, for a coaching session for some of our keen hockey players. Kate also kindly acted as the guest speaker at our Speech Day presentations.
