In The Classroom

Infants

Each of the Reception, Year One and Year Two classes has their own class teacher who is supported by a full-time qualified teaching assistant.

The children are taught by specialist teachers in some subjects such as Modern Foreign Languages, Computing, Music, Physical Education and Dance. Pupils also have a regular swimming lesson.

The children in the Infant department have a separate playground as well as being able to use the main Junior School playground and Astro for their supervised playtimes.

At the end of Year Two, most children move automatically from the Infants into the Juniors.

Juniors

There are usually three parallel classes in each of the four years. In Year Three and Four, the class teacher teaches his or her class for most subjects, although some subjects are taught by specialist staff.

More specialist teaching is introduced in the final two years. The children are based in their own classrooms but move to specialist teaching rooms for some subjects.

Curriculum

The curriculum is broad. There is an emphasis on the teaching of English, Mathematics and Science, with appropriate curriculum provision for core subjects. Music and the Arts have a high profile, with dedicated curriculum time each week and French and Spanish are taught, with an emphasis on oral work. All pupils are taught Computing by a specialist teacher and they have regular library lessons. Personal, Social and Health Education is also taught each week.

The facilities are excellent. There is a computer room with Chrome Books and iPads available for use in the classrooms, a library with a computerised system and dedicated rooms for Music, Science, Art and Design and Technology.

Infant and Junior children have regular PE and swimming lessons, taught by specialist staff. Juniors also have weekly games lessons. The major sports are football, rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, athletics, cross country, tennis and swimming. Teams compete regularly in tournaments and competitions and the standard of sport throughout the school is high. Matches against other schools are played during the week and all children who wish to represent the school at sport are given the opportunity.

In addition to having timetabled Music lessons, many children learn to play musical instruments, taught by visiting peripatetic teachers. Children regularly play in assemblies and sing in choirs, and the orchestra and other smaller groups also perform during the year.

We hope that this brief information is useful and will provide you with an insight into the work your child will be doing this term.

Diversity in the curriculum

At Stockport Grammar Junior School we acknowledge that pupils have unique identities and we believe that our school is a community where all members are valued and have a voice.

Within our curriculum we find opportunities to be culturally inclusive, challenge inequality, observe global issues and support pupils to have a sense of belonging to a common humanity with shared values and responsibilities.

Educational visits

Visits to places of interest, both local and further afield, are regularly arranged for all children, as are visits to school by individuals and groups. All pupils in the Juniors have the opportunity to go on a residential trip each year.

Pastoral care

It is essential to us that every child is able to feel happy and secure. There is regular contact between class teachers and parents. Children also benefit from the support of two full-time school nurses. Bullying in any form is not tolerated, and there is a clear anti-bullying policy in school with procedures made clear to children, parents and staff.

Assessment and reporting

All year groups have a parent information evening at the start of the autumn term and there are formal parents’ consultations twice a year. Parents are welcome to contact their child’s teacher at any time to discuss their progress.

Parents of children in the Infants receive a full written report in the middle of the summer term with opportunity for parents to meet with the class teacher before the end of the school year.

In the Juniors, work attitude grades are reported for core subjects in October along with attainment grades in December. Core subject reports are sent home in February along with work attitude and attainment grades for all subjects. In the summer term children have a full written report for all subjects.

Children are assessed throughout the year in a variety of ways, appropriate to their recent learning and next step targets. In the autumn term, Year Six have opportunities to prepare for the Senior School entrance exam, confident in the knowledge that they will be ready when the time comes to sit the actual exam. In the summer term, Years One-Six are assessed in core subjects.

Year Six pupils sit the entrance examination for the senior school in January. The vast majority of Year Six move into the Senior School at age 11.

Homework

Homework is set regularly. The amount varies according to the age of the child. It is important that time limits should be observed; homework must not become a burden for either child or parent.
