OBITUARY OF DR. JOHN RIMINGTON (Old Stopfordian)
Former Consultant Chest Physician & Director of the Greater Manchester Mobile Chest X-Ray Service.
Born 1923 (Qualified Manchester 1947 MB. ChB: MD. MFCH) Died December 2015.
After qualification John embarked on surgical posts at Stockport Infirmary culminating as Asst RSO when he developed serious chest disease necessitating 2 years of treatment and retraining in Chest Disease in the chest clinics and hospitals of Shropshire and East Cheshire.
Appointed Tuberculosis Physician & Director of Stockport MMR Service he made this the basis of his medical career enlarging his remit to cover all Greater Manchester and expanding his organisation to 5 mobile and static X-ray centres and changing to selective examination of high risk and symptomatic cases thereby greatly increasing the case yields. He also saw cases clinically in certain chest clinics of East Cheshire.
He carried out and published several investigations into the relationship between tobacco smoking and chest disease. Retiring to the Isle of Man in 1983 he maintained his interest in medicine & public health being elected a fellow of the RSPH.
He was a very keen gardener and golfer playing into his 92nd year.
He was forever grateful for his education and time at Stockport Grammar School and leaves a legacy for bursaries and scholarships.
He leaves Ruth, his wife of 63 years.
